Growing Community Media Education Reporter

Job title: Education reporter for Growing Community Media
Reports to: Editors of Wednesday Journal and Village Free Press

Job summary:
Our education reporter will report primarily on K-12 public schools for our flags.

Across these districts we intend to blend news and news feature coverage which extends from the classroom to the board room. It is our goal to reflect the voices of students, parents and teachers in our stories in addition to administrators and school board members.

On average the reporter is expected to write six stories in a week which will be published through the week on our digital and print platforms.

The reporter should, over time, be pitching the majority of story ideas from this beat to editors. Some stories will be assigned by editors.

The reporter will be present in the schools and build sources in those school neighborhoods.

The education reporter will also, on occasion, be covering private schools, early education, and two local universities and a community college in our coverage area.

Experience needed:
Our hire will have genuine enthusiasm for community-based education reporting and for telling stories reflecting voices often not heard in local news. Our education coverage should always have an equity perspective.

While our candidate may well have community journalism experience and/or college journalism experience, our newsroom has often hired reporters with degrees in fields outside of journalism but with a curiosity to tell neighborhood stories.
